What it is

A transit is where a planet is in the sky right now, measured against where the planets were at your birth. Your natal chart is a snapshot frozen at the moment you were born; transits are the planets moving across that map in real time. Whenever a transiting planet forms an aspect to one of your natal planets or points — a conjunction, opposition, square, or trine — it switches on that part of your chart. Transits are the engine behind most daily and monthly forecasts.

Not all transits weigh the same. Fast-moving inner planets — the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars — pass through a chart in hours to weeks and color your days and moods. The outer planets — Jupiter through Pluto — move slowly, spending months or years in one place and shaping whole chapters of life. That speed difference drives most of the rest of reading them.

How to read it

Reading a transit takes three steps: name the transiting planet, name the aspect it forms, and name the natal point it touches. Saturn conjunct your natal Venus reads differently from a Saturn trine, and both change meaning if they hit your Moon instead. The house the transit moves through tells you the life area involved — career, home, money, relationships. Exact aspects, when both bodies reach the same degree, mark the peak of the influence.

Duration is the other dial. A planet that goes retrograde while transiting can cross the same degree three times, stretching a short event into a long arc — which is why Saturn transits feel so drawn out. Outer planets hitting your personal planets or angles are generally the heaviest. And transits describe themes and timing windows, not a fixed script for what must happen.

What it means in practice

People often treat transits as fortune-telling — 'this transit means I'll lose my job.' That's the most common mistake. A Saturn transit to your tenth house doesn't guarantee a job loss; it points to a season where career and responsibility demand restructuring, and how you handle it is up to you. The same transit that pushes one person toward a promotion pushes another toward leaving a bad fit. Use the window: start things on expansion transits, consolidate and rebuild during Saturn or outer-planet ones.

How it connects

Transits are the timing layer on top of a natal chart — the sky's current weather meeting your fixed birth map. They're closely tied to retrogrades, since a retrograde period is simply a transit moving backward through degrees it already crossed. Progressions and solar returns are slower, complementary timing techniques, and an ephemeris is the raw data that tells you where transiting planets are on any given day. Together they answer the 'when' behind everything astrology describes.
