What it is

A conjunction is when two planets sit at nearly the same degree of the zodiac, sharing essentially one point in the sky. It's the closest of the major aspects. Where a square or trine sets two energies in dialogue across distance, a conjunction fuses them into one: the two functions don't so much interact as operate as a single amplified force. That's why it's often called the strongest aspect in the chart.

How strong depends on how tight. A conjunction within a degree or two is unmistakable; one at eight or ten degrees is present but softer. Modern practice allows roughly eight to ten degrees of orb for the Sun and Moon, six to eight for the planets. A special case is cazimi — a planet within a third of a degree of the Sun, traditionally read as exceptionally empowered.

How to read it

To read a conjunction, name both planets first, then look at the sign and house. The sign colors how the fused energy expresses; the house shows where it plays out in life. A Venus-Jupiter conjunction in the second house and the same conjunction in the seventh describe different stories. The chart's tightest conjunction often marks the personality's most concentrated, visible feature — the thing people notice first, for better and worse.

Conjunctions are the seed moment of a planetary cycle, the way a new moon opens a new lunar month. Read that way, a conjunction asks what is being planted in that house and sign. When three or more planets crowd together in a conjunction, the pattern is called a stellium, and that area becomes a major focus of the person's life force.

What it means in practice

The most common mistake is assuming a conjunction is automatically good or bad. It's neither on its own — the quality comes from the planets involved. Venus conjunct Jupiter blends generosity and pleasure; Mars conjunct Saturn concentrates drive against restriction, which can be grueling but also enormously productive. In daily life a conjunction acts like a spotlight: wherever the fused planets sit, that territory gets unusually intense and focused. A transiting conjunction to one of your natal planets marks the opening of a new cycle there — a classic reset-and-begin signal.

How it connects

Conjunction is the zero point of the aspect family — the place every planetary cycle starts. It forms the axis of the lunation cycle with its opposite, the opposition, just as the new moon faces the full moon. A stellium is simply a triple or bigger conjunction, and the orb logic that defines a conjunction applies to every other aspect too. In synastry, one person's planet conjuncting another's is among the most direct contacts between two charts.
