What it is

An aspect is the angular relationship between two planets, measured in degrees around the 360-degree zodiac wheel. It describes how two planetary functions interact — whether they cooperate easily, clash, or sit somewhere in between. Planets on their own are a list; aspects are what turn a chart into one connected story. The five major aspects are the conjunction (0 degrees), sextile (60), square (90), trine (120), and opposition (180).

Each major aspect has a distinct character. The conjunction fuses two energies into one blended force; the sextile offers opportunity that needs effort to use; the square creates friction and drive; the trine flows with natural ease; the opposition sets two planets face to face, asking for balance. Squares and oppositions are called hard aspects; trines and sextiles soft ones. Neither kind is good or bad by itself.

How to read it

To read aspects, use the chart's aspect grid, which lists every pair of planets and the angle between them. An aspect counts if it falls within orb — the tolerance allowed around the exact angle. For the major aspects, an orb of roughly 6 to 8 degrees is common, and the Sun and Moon are often given a bit more. The tighter the orb, the stronger and more noticeable the aspect; wide orbs are subtler and may barely register.

When reading an aspect, combine the meanings of the two planets involved. A tight aspect between two personal planets — Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars — tends to matter more than a wide one between two outer planets. Also note whether the aspect is applying, moving toward exactness and felt as something building, or separating, past exactness and felt as a completed arc. In short: the planets tell you what, the aspect tells you how they work together.

What it means in practice

In practice, aspects show up as recurring themes in a life. A Mars–Saturn square might repeat as the pattern of pushing against limits; a Venus–Jupiter trine as an easy, generous way with people and pleasure. The most useful habit is to find the strongest aspects in your chart — the tight ones involving your Sun or Moon — and work with those first. The point is not to label aspects good or bad, but to see how two parts of you are wired together and learn to use the wiring.

How it connects

Aspects are the connective tissue of the chart. Transits work by planets making aspects to your natal chart — a transiting Saturn square to your natal Sun is a very different season from a transiting trine. Synastry reads the aspects between two people's charts to see how their energies mesh. And the major aspects combine into recognizable patterns such as the T-square, grand trine, and grand cross — essentially several aspects arranged into a single shape.
