What it is

Chiron is a small body discovered in November 1977, orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. It's the first known "centaur" — an icy object crossing planetary paths — and in a chart it's read as the wounded healer. Wherever Chiron sits is where you carry an old wound, and, at the same time, where you're capable of helping others with the same kind of pain.

The name comes from the Greek myth of the centaur Chiron, a wise teacher and healer accidentally wounded by a poisoned arrow. Because he was immortal, the wound never killed him — and never fully healed. That image captures the archetype: a hurt that doesn't quite close, but becomes a doorway to understanding, for yourself and for others.

How to read it

Chiron's sign shows the nature of the wound — the flavor of the pain, such as identity, belonging, or worth. Its house shows the arena of life where that wound keeps surfacing: home, relationships, career, and so on. Aspects to Chiron show which planets it colors and how loudly the theme speaks. You need your birth time for the house and aspects, but the sign alone needs only the birth date.

A good rule of thumb: notice where you feel chronically "not enough," and you've probably found Chiron. The pattern tends to repeat — the same sore spot reappearing in different relationships, jobs, or projects. Read it gently: the wound is a sensitivity, not a verdict. Chiron returns to its birth position around age 50, a cycle that often brings a midlife reckoning with the theme.

What it means in practice

In practice, Chiron describes a pain that ordinary fixes don't fully resolve — and the unusual wisdom that grows out of living with it. People often end up drawn to work that circles their exact Chiron theme: the person who struggled to be heard becomes the attentive listener; the one who doubted their worth becomes a generous supporter of others.

Two misconceptions are worth flagging. Chiron is not a curse or a life sentence — it names a sensitivity, not a doom. And "healer" doesn't mean you must become a therapist; the gift can be quiet and personal. Chiron is also only one thread in a chart — the Moon, Saturn, and hard aspects describe difficulty too.

How it connects

Chiron connects to the entry on the natal chart as one point among many — not a master key, but a meaningful thread. Its house placement is read exactly like any other house placement in this glossary. It's often compared to the lunar nodes: the nodes point to direction and karma, while Chiron points to what still hurts and what that pain has made possible.
