What it is

Retrograde is when a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac from our viewpoint on Earth. No planet actually reverses direction — they all keep orbiting the Sun the same way. The illusion comes from relative speeds: when Earth overtakes a slower outer planet, or a faster inner planet laps us, the other body seems to stall, drift backward, pause, then move forward again. It's exactly like passing a slower car on a highway and watching it appear to roll backward.

In astrology, that backward appearance is read as the planet's energy turning inward — toward review rather than fresh starts. The cadence differs by planet: Mercury goes retrograde three or four times a year for about three weeks, Venus every eighteen months, Mars roughly every two years, and the outer planets for months each year. The Sun and Moon never do.

How to read it

Retrograde appears in two forms. A natal retrograde — a planet moving backward at your birth — is read as that energy working more inwardly: a Mercury-retrograde mind revisits ideas before voicing them. The more famous form is a transit retrograde, when a planet currently in the sky turns around. Astrologers watch the whole arc: the planet slows into its station, moves backward, stations again, and then passes the same degrees a second and third time. Those shadow periods and triple passes are where themes arrive, intensify, and finally settle.

The reading follows the planet's domain: Mercury retrograde touches communication, travel, and contracts; Venus revisits relationships and values; Mars turns drive and anger inward; outer-planet retrogrades rework long-term structures. So a retrograde is best treated as a cycle with a beginning, a peak, and an exit — not one blanket event.

What it means in practice

The biggest misunderstanding is that retrograde means 'everything goes wrong for three weeks.' In practice it's a change of gears: the planet's energy turns from outward action to review. Mercury retrograde is genuinely bad for launching new products and signing contracts you skimmed, but it's excellent for editing, reconnecting, and finishing what you started. And retrograde is not rare or alarming — three to five planets are usually retrograde at any given moment, and the outer planets spend nearly half the year looking backward.

How it connects

Retrograde is a special kind of transit — a planet moving backward through degrees it already crossed, which stretches and repeats the transit's themes. It's also an aspect condition: a retrograde planet still makes conjunctions, squares, and trines, just with a more internal flavor. Mercury retrograde arrives on the shortest cycle, while Venus and Mars retrogrades come on slower schedules. In a natal chart, a retrograde is simply one more fact about how a planet works — not a curse attached to the chart.
