What it is

An opposition is an aspect where two planets sit about 180 degrees apart — directly across the chart, in opposite signs. It's classed as a hard aspect, but its flavor differs from a square. A square rubs two energies together in friction; an opposition holds them at arm's length, facing off in a tug-of-war or seesaw between two needs that both feel valid. The classic example is the full moon, when the Sun and Moon stand opposite each other in the sky.

The opposing planets share a modality but sit in opposite elements — Aries against Libra, Taurus against Scorpio — so the tension stays in one key while pulling two directions. The orb is roughly eight to ten degrees for the Sun and Moon, six to eight for the personal planets. The tighter the orb, the louder the tug.

How to read it

To read an opposition, first name the pair and what each planet needs — one end is the pole you identify with, the other the pole you may project outward onto partners, bosses, or 'people like that.' The house axis tells you where the negotiation plays out: first against seventh is self versus relationships; fourth against tenth is home versus career; second against eighth is your resources versus shared money and intimacy. The signs set the tone, the houses set the stage.

The invitation is not to pick a side but to hold both. In practice that means giving each planet a legitimate role and time instead of swinging between extremes. Because oppositions so often show up through other people — we attract or collide with those who carry the side we haven't claimed — they are among the best teachers of relationship dynamics in any chart.

The most common mistake is reading an opposition as a permanent conflict you must eliminate one side of. It's better read as a balancing act that matures with practice. Someone with a Sun-Moon opposition isn't doomed to feel torn; they learn a rhythm that honors both visibility and rest. In transits, an opposition is a culmination point — a planet opposite your natal point brings a theme to a head, often through a confrontation or a relationship that forces the issue into the open. The work is integration, not victory.
