What it is

Houses are the twelve sections of the birth chart, each governing a domain of life. If signs tell you how a planet expresses itself and planets tell you what is being expressed, houses tell you where it happens — the arena. The first house covers self and appearance, the second money and values, the third communication and siblings, and so on through partnerships, career, and the more hidden corners of life.

Houses are tied to the Earth's rotation and to your exact time and place of birth, which is why an accurate birth time matters so much. The Ascendant — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth — begins the first house, and from there the houses run counterclockwise around the chart. Every chart has all twelve houses; what varies is which signs and planets occupy them.

How to read it

To read houses, first locate the Ascendant, which marks the start of the first house. Then note which sign sits on the cusp, or edge, of each house — that sign colors how the life area plays out. Look at which planets fall in which houses: a planet in a house shows what is active in that area. Venus in the tenth house, for instance, points to charm, aesthetics, or relationship work playing out in the career and public sphere.

A word about house systems: different systems divide the sky differently, so the same chart can look different in different apps. Whole sign houses give each house one full sign and are common in traditional astrology; Placidus, the most widely used system in modern Western astrology, produces uneven house sizes; equal house gives every house a full 30 degrees from the Ascendant. There is no single correct system — pick one and read consistently.

What it means in practice

Houses answer the practical question "where does this show up in my life?" A planet's sign describes the style; its house describes the actual arena — career, money, home, relationships. A common misunderstanding is that an empty house means that area of life is unimportant. It does not; it simply means no planet adds extra emphasis there, and the sign on the cusp plus the house's ruler still tell the story. Also worth knowing: opposite houses form axes that ask for balance, like the first house of self and the seventh of partnership.

How it connects

Houses tie the whole chart together. The Ascendant starts the first house, and the Midheaven crowns the tenth, marking the career angle; their opposites create the Descendant and the IC, and together these four are the chart's main angles. House rulers — the planets that rule the signs on each house cusp — link the houses to each other, so a ruler's condition describes how that house's story plays out. Aspects between planets in different houses show how the life areas interact.
