What it is

Firdaria is a medieval timing technique, carried into European astrology from Persian and Arabic sources, that divides a lifetime into a fixed run of planetary periods. Each period is ruled by one of the seven classical planets, and while a planet holds its period, the years take on its color - the themes it rules and the part of the chart it activates become the backdrop of life. It's one of the older 'time lord' systems.

The sequence is built into your birth chart rather than following the current sky, which sets it apart from transits. The order depends on your sect: people born by day begin with a ten-year Sun period, people born at night with a nine-year Moon period. The full run - seven planets plus the lunar nodes - covers seventy-five years before repeating.

How to read it

To find your firdaria, you first need to know whether you were born by day or by night, then walk the sequence from birth to your current age - most chart software will mark your current lord. The major lord sets the long theme: a Jupiter period tends to carry expansion, a Saturn period discipline and structural work. The sub-period tightens the timing to a window of about a year.

The real reading sends you back to the natal chart. Firdaria only hands a planet the microphone; what it says was decided by how that planet sits at birth. Ask whether the lord is strong or afflicted, which houses it rules and occupies, and what it aspects. A well-placed lord runs a smoother period; a debilitated or hard-aspect one turns the same themes into friction.
